Visitors came to the MPA Community Network stand at European Maritime Day 2025 in Cork, where players faced real-life scenarios in Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), stepping into the shoes of different stakeholders—from fishers and conservationists to tourism operators and local policymakers—and respond to unexpected challenges using creative solutions.
🎲 “This is brilliant!” was a phrase we heard repeatedly throughout the two-day event, as players praised the game’s engaging format, educational value, and creative design. Some even asked if they could buy a copy on the spot!
The game doesn’t just entertain—it educates. Each round places players in a scenario drawn from real MPA management dilemmas, challenging them to negotiate trade-offs, balance interests, and make decisions that benefit both nature and communities. It’s a playful yet powerful tool to raise awareness about the complex realities of marine conservation and the importance of inclusive governance.
Hosted at the European Commission’s flagship event for the maritime community, the MPA Card Game was part of a broader effort to showcase the tools and stories shaping the future of Marine Protected Areas across Europe. We were thrilled to connect with fellow ocean advocates, exchange ideas, and invite players to dive into the role of MPA champions.
Curious to learn more about the MPA Community Network? Come play a new game on MPA corridors design at the METEOR side event in the frame of the UN Ocean Conference this upcoming June 11th!
And stay tuned—we’re exploring ways to make the game available beyond the event!
