MSP4BIO

Unlocking the potential of Marine Spatial Planning as a strategic vehicle and versatile tool for safeguarding marine ecosystems.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Advancing marine ecosystem conservation with an integrated management framework

MSP4BIO’s main objective is an integrated Ecological-Socio-Economic (ESE) management framework to safeguard and restore marine ecosystems. ESE evaluates the compatibility of maritime uses and protection measures, with a practical typology for categorizing their socio-economic impacts. The framework will address marine biodiversity gaps and enhance MSP and MPA management integration while adhering to relevant policies (MSFD, WFD, MSPD, CFP, etc.).

To showcase and operationalize the ESE management framework, six test sites across five European Sea Basins were carefully chosen. These sites represent processes at national, sub-and-supranational levels, diverse geographical scales, and various socio-economic and environmental challenges.

Communities of Practice (CoP) have been established at each test site to facilitate interactions among planners, regulators, and researchers involved in MSP and MPAs. Workshops and focus group meetings will drive knowledge exchange, foster ownership, and ensure the widespread adoption of developed tools within the test areas and beyond. MSP4BIO aims to significantly improve marine ecosystem conservation and management across Europe.
