MPA network design game

Inspired by the mechanics of the game Clue, in this game the team(s) receive 21 different data cards—ranging from biodiversity assessments to calls to protest by discontent stakeholders—having to collaboratively analyse trade-offs, ecological priorities, and human pressures to propose relevant protected areas and potentially a network that unites them.

Concept

The MPA network design game is developed to make people discuss what is the best setup for creating an MPA corridor with the datasets and information given.

There is no right or wrong answer necessarily, just different weighting. A group might go for an approach heavily pro-ecosystem conservation, while another team might put more weight to the standing of the different stakeholder groups.

This game should be played by at least 2 teams that receive the same information, and explain their corridor design and the decisions made. The moderator should highlight the differences in the decisions from each team to create a discussion between the different weightings.

How to get access

The game is open for anyone to use as long as it is accredited to the MPA Community Network.

On the link below, you can download the instructions and the cards with the map. For optimal use we recommend:

  • Printing the map on at least an A1 format and in color.
  • Printing the cards on an A4 format each, in color.

Note that you will need markers that go well on color paper.
